I would like to leave for a moment the places to visit in New York and talk a little bit about where to eat in this great city. I want to clarify that this is nothing but my personal experience. It won´t be the most top, neither the cheapest nor the more expensive. But these are the places I ate during my stay, and fortunately I had very good experiences in each one of them.
When planning my trip, I tried to get the most information I could, going through websites such as tripadvisor, apps such as yelp, as well as forums and blogs (to more or less have an idea). I wanted to eat something typical and try those meals i see in movies or I hear in stories about the United States and more specifically about New York. Today I will tell you about the first place where I ate, I hope you like it!
Virgil´s Real BBQ in Times Square:
Typical restaurant, located on 42nd with Broadway. I had arrived to NYC earlier that morning. I remember we were all day visiting places, it was around 10 PM and we had not eaten since breakfast. We were starving. When we entered the place I really liked the style. We were located quickly, a very friendly waiter came and as we did not have a clue about what to eat, we ask him to recommend us something. A friend warned us about the size of the portions, but we had not eaten anything so when we were asked if we were hungry our response was YES! He recommended us a menu to share with a little bit of everything, and the “TRAINWRECK FRIES” potatoes. This was our menu to share, which according to him, would be ok for us:
-Carolina Pulled Chicken
-Texas BBQ Beef Brisket
-Memphis Smoked Pork Spare Ribs
-Smoked BBQ Chicken
-Our Trash Riblets
-HICKORY SMOKED BAKED BEANS
You can imagine our face when the potatoes arrive first, not on a plate but on a tray. Then the parade of everything listed above began. We had been warned…
We were two but we could have easily been four and no one would have left the restaurant wanting something else to eat. Really brutal. The taste great. Healthy? Not that much… but it was only one day… or was it?
We came back another day but this time we wanted to share a plate of nachos, as we had seen that the size was huge. We decided not to fall into the temptation of asking again for a whole army. As I had also read that the desserts were great, we just ordered the nachos to share and then each of us would order a dessert.
We ordered a cheesecake and an apple pie, you should have seen our faces when we received the dishes: they were huge! And they tasted a 10! In conclusion, really good food. For two people it costs around 68 USD including taxes, tips, drink and a coffee. The second time it was around 48 USD including the nachos, 2 desserts, 2 coffees, 2 drinks, fees and gratuities. Would I recommend it? Yes, of course. I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I wrote it.
